Volunteers’ Week 2017 is here: Time to give our volunteers a massive cheer

Here at RSBC, we are lucky to be supported by an amazing team of volunteers. As today marks the start of Volunteers’ Week, we thought it would be a great time to be able to promote quite how amazing they are, and of course, to say a big thank you!

This week you’ll hear from volunteers about their life-changing work, as well as from the blind young people they support, who want to share what RSBC volunteers mean to them.

To get our celebrations started, volunteer manager Alberta Gutteridge, writes about the contribution of RSBC volunteers, and how their generous work is making a real difference to the lives of blind young people.

Volunteers play a big part in our wide-ranging programme of activities that run throughout the year. They have supported over 100 activities this year alone. Health and Wellbeing Clubs, creative and music workshops, trips to the theatre (including touch tours), cinema trips, self-defence classes and sensory tours of the Houses of Parliament … and sometimes a spot of lunch and a good chat… The list is endless, and volunteers help make them all possible.

The miles build up too with volunteers travelling far and wide across London to make sure that the young people we work with are able to attend in the first place!

But it doesn’t end there… Inspirational volunteers support our busy Family Engagement Worker Michelle with her clinics at the Royal London Hospital. Vision impaired young people are also volunteering, mentoring other blind and partially sighted people on RSBC’s Employability programme. Fundraising volunteers are also making an enormous contribution to RSBC, raising hundreds of pounds by taking on our bucket collections.
What always impresses me is not only all those hours donated, 1500 and counting, but the energy and enthusiasm and the willingness to help on the days when we really need their help!

As Volunteer Manager I am looking forward to saying thank you in person at our Summer Celebration for Volunteers and Supporters this Sunday 4 June, but I want to shout it out here too: Thank you!!
