Volunteers’ week: “Volunteering at RSBC has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life “

Welcome to Volunteers’ Week, a time to celebrate the wonderful work of volunteers. At RSBC, volunteers play a vital role in helping us run our services for blind children and young people.

One of these volunteers is Coco; she has been volunteering with RSBC since September 2016, and has mainly been supporting the blind young members of the RSBC Choir. Here Coco writesabout her time volunteering at RSBC and what she gets out of it.

Helping blind young people to get creative

I volunteer by helping blind young members at RSBC activity groups. I mainly volunteer at RSBC Choir rehearsals, supporting activity leaders. I commute with the young members to and from the sessions, at lunch I help the members choose their meals, and generally help out with sighted guiding and giving any assistance in the creative activities.

My volunteering highlight

The highlight of my time so far has got to be the Christmas concert. Seeing all of them singing with all their hearts, a song that started as a small brainstorm a few months earlier, was really special.

What I get out of volunteering

Volunteering at RSBC has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Rewarding, because I do believe I help to make a change in the lives of the blind young people I support.

Volunteering has allowed me to grow as a person by helping me become more open-minded. Seeing the young people overcome challenges, and watching their talent flourish in the sessions has taught me so much. I also get to have loads and loads of laughs!

Volunteering for RSBC is just great

I’d say to anyone looking to volunteer that volunteering is nice, but volunteering for RSBC is just great! You are part of the RSBC family, everyone is so welcoming and volunteering is flexible and easy to fit around your life.

Are you inspired to volunteer for RSBC?

From working with blind young people as a Services volunteer to more office based roles, there’s bound to be a voluntary opportunity that’s just right for you. Without our fantastic volunteers, we simply couldn’t run our life-changing activities for blind and partially sighted children and young people. Check out what’s on offer, we can’t wait for you to join us.

Register your interest to become one of our volunteers.
