Maya and Sharn’s story
When Sharn’s daughter Maya was diagnosed as blind, she felt completely alone. She was terrified - how would Maya learn to sit, crawl, walk, or enjoy life? And how could Maya ever experience the magic of Christmas?
Then Sharn met Mandie, an RSBC Family Practitioner, who gave her practical play ideas, guidance and reassurance - as well as sibling support that helped Maya’s sister, Ella, understand and adapt.
Thanks to Mandie, Sharn learned how to make everyday life - and Christmas - joyful again. And now Maya's thriving.

How The Big Give works
RSBC is taking part in The Big Give 2025 Christmas Challenge - a special week when every pound you donate can be doubled.
Supporters and partners pledge match-funding before the campaign. During Big Give week, your donation is instantly doubled. That's twice the impact for the children and young people we support.
