Training FAQs

Who is this for?

This course is for anyone who delivers services for children and young people.

You might be a youth worker, sports club, library, volunteer, Scout or Guide group, or anyone who has a role working directly with children and young people.

What is the training about?

This training is a free interactive, online, 2½ hour course where you’ll gain the practical knowledge and confidence to be able to include blind and partially sighted children and young people in your services, whether in-person or virtually. This includes local youth clubs, activities, sports sessions, and any other provision that welcomes children and young people.

Why is this important?

We’d like to work together with you to promote equality, inclusion and diversity so that blind and partially sighted children can access the same activities as their sighted peers. There are generally very few specialist clubs and activities that these children can access locally, so being able to come along to your provision will truly be a game changer for them.

What will I learn?

You’ll learn about common eye conditions, and their impact on the person.

You’ll also receive practical guidance relating to how to adapt activities and make your sessions inclusive for young people with vision impairment. This will help you to create inclusive activities that everyone attending your provision can enjoy.

Taking part in this training will give you the opportunity to achieve the RSBC ‘VI friendly and accessible activity provider’ kitemark. Your trainer will let you know more about how to achieve this, and they’ll be able to share the news that
you are now inclusive for blind and partially sighted children and young people.

What if I can't attend the online training sessions?

If you’re a volunteer or have limited time, we also offer free video training of less than 40 minutes to accommodate your availability.

The video training provides the essential information you need to start making your activities more inclusive, and offers a good foundation for building an inclusive plan. You can find out more and sign-up for the video training here

I've completed the training - what next?

You are eligible to apply for the RSBC VI Friendly and Accessible Activity Provider kitemark. You can begin the application process here.

Our kitemark recognises organisations that are committed to creating inclusive and accessible environments for vision impaired (VI) individuals. It signifies that providers have undergone specialist VI awareness training, ensured their facilities and activities accommodate those with visual impairments, and actively foster an inclusive experience for all participants. This kitemark helps families and individuals identify trusted providers dedicated to supporting the VI community through thoughtful design and proactive engagement. There are three steps to achieving the kitemark:

1. Complete our questionnaire. Please note, you’ll need to have all the actions your organisation has taken to hand, and know who the training has been shared with, prior to completing the survey.

2. Our specialist team will assess your question responses, then contact you. They may ask for more information, or they may provide you with the kitemark and the terms for use. The kitemark is valid for 2 years, after which you will need to attend refresher training and again complete the questionnaire.

3. Once your kitemark accreditation is confirmed, we’ll provide you with a logo to share to let children and families know you’re an inclusive activity provider. We will also list you on our website as a VI-friendly provider by region here. If your organisation is looking to apply for the Kitemark, you can begin the application process here.
