RSBC Dorton College

RSBC Dorton College is our independent specialist college in the London Borough of Bromley. We offer day provision for 16 to 25-year-olds, and many of our students have additional needs.

We’re the only independent specialist further education provider for vision impaired young people in London and the Southeast. We offer a wide range of courses, and a bespoke curriculum supported by a diverse range of trained staff.

Our approach

We blend mainstream and specialist education, so that our students get the best of both worlds. We aim to strike the right balance and provide 'just enough support' so that students can develop their independence without feeling unsupported.

We work in partnership with mainstream colleges, and provide a range of specialist support and learning alongside that's tailored to each student's needs, interests and aspirations.

‘Good’ in every area

“Almost all students make significant progress in developing new skills and knowledge in subjects they have not been able to study before.”

How it works

We partner with mainstream, Sixth Form and Specialist providers. Once your course has been chosen, we'll arrange a your specialist Learning Support Assistant. Tutors at the partner send us work in advance, and we translate it into the format each student requires, such as Grade 1 or 2 Braille, large print, coloured print or background, or raised diagrams.

Most courses are 3 days a week, with the remainder at our Hub, where students have weekly 121s such as braille, habilitation, OT, SaLT, or physiotherapy, as well as sessions on wellbeing, life skills, and more.

Enrichment activities

Our students have access to a wide range of enrichment opportunities. We have a weekly afternoon where students can choose activities such as going to the gym, swimming, table tennis, pool, going out in the community, gardening, and more.

We run meditation and yoga sessions especially for those with vision impairment. And we provide regular trips, which have included visiting the theatre, going out for a meal, or bowling.

British Values & Prevent Duty

British Values and the Prevent Duty are covered in health and wellbeing sessions, but can also be covered on an individual basis as needed. They’re updated annually to reflect relevant legislation, and Dorton College supports students so that they can understand these concepts in a needs-appropriate way.
