Supporting emotional wellbeing alongside your core professional role

This experiential workshop is for teams of professionals who support vision impaired children, young people and their families in education, health or other settings, to explore ways to respond to emotional distress.

We know that professionals support emotional distress every day, alongside their core work with family, and this workshop provides a framework for this support, considering the challenges to responding to emotional wellbeing when this is not the primary focus.

Training FAQs

Who is this for?

Teams of professionals who work with vision impaired children, young people and their families, in any context where emotional support is not the primary focus of their work.

You might be a QTVI, an ECLO, an Ophthalmologist, a habilitation worker or anyone who has a role working directly with VI children, young people and their families.

What is the workshop about?

The workshop explores ways to respond to and manage emotional distress when it is not the focus of your everyday work. It can be difficult to know how to help with distress when this is not your primary role and it can reduce the time you and the young person or parent have to discuss the support you are there to offer.

The workshop offers ways to contain the emotional distress so there is space for your support to take place, equips you with skills and resources for supporting emotional wellbeing and ways to recognise and work with the impact of emotional distress, in your professional role.

“The training had real benefits for me in both my own practice, and as one of the Lead Teachers in the team. The areas of boundaries and staying in the remit of your role were particularly significant areas to cover.“ QTVI attending training in 2025.

Why is this important?

If you are unable to deliver your support as the professional, because your time is taken up responding to emotional wellbeing, then the children and families are not able to receive what you are there for. Responding to emotional distress when you are not familiar or experienced at doing so, alongside the time pressures of needing to offer the support you are there to deliver, can lead to stress, internal conflict and a blurring of professional boundaries.

This workshop can help you manage these challenges and feel confident in responding to emotional wellbeing, in a way that does not diminish your primary role and leaves you feeling empowered to help with emotional distress.
