Helping her secure her first job
We’re proud to have so many, dedicated, passionate and skilled volunteers who make an incredible contribution to RSBC. They’re vital to the work we do, and without them we couldn’t deliver the breadth of services we currently provide. From helping out at events and trips to supporting us in our day-to-day operations, they help our operations run smoothly.
This Volunteers’ Week, we caught up with volunteer Hannah. She’s been a remote volunteer with us for seven months, and she told us all about why she decided to volunteer for us and what she’s gained from it.
Q. Could you tell us a bit about yourself, Hannah?
A. I’m a marketing executive living in Cornwall. I started my volunteer role at RSBC in October 2024 and I’ve been volunteering from home, supporting the Marketing and Communications team.
Q. What inspired you to volunteer at RSBC?
A. Volunteering with RSBC was a no brainer! It’s an inspiring charity with such a supportive team of staff, all working for an incredible cause.
Q. Why did you take up a marketing and comms volunteer role?
A. I really wanted to get into a career in digital marketing, but I lacked the previous experience and qualifications needed to do that. I started looking into volunteering opportunities to try to gain that experience and help a very worthy cause at the same time. And that’s worked out for me – volunteering at RSBC has helped me gain a much broader range of experience in marketing and comms.
Q. What’s been your favourite part of your RSBC volunteering experience?
A. My favourite project by far has been a campaign RSBC’s been working on and I was lucky enough to be involved with it! I can’t say too much just now as it’s yet to be launched, but I think it’s such a great idea and will be so impactful when it does. It’s been a fun and exciting project to be a part of.
Q. How have you found volunteering remotely with RSBC?
A. Volunteering from home has worked so well for me. It’s allowed me to remain flexible around my full-time job, while still receiving amazing support and guidance through Zoom calls and emails with the Marcomms team at RSBC.
Q. Has volunteering at RSBC helped you in any way in your personal life at all?
A. I think my volunteering experience has really helped give my confidence a boost. And I’ve enjoyed having the satisfaction of completing work that’ll be making a positive difference to children’s lives.
Q. Do you think volunteering will help you in a professional capacity?
A. Absolutely! I know that my time volunteering at RSBC has helped me professionally. When I started in October, I had a degree in Zoology and a couple of online marketing courses under my belt. Seven months later, I have real, practical marketing experience. In fact, I’ve just received my first job offer in digital marketing – and that’s all thanks to volunteering with RSBC!
Q. Has volunteering at RSBC expanded your knowledge and understanding of people with vision impairments?
A. It’s been really insightful, especially when it comes to accessibility considerations in digital content. That’s so important to know as I’m going forward in this type of career.
Q. What would you say to someone who’s considering becoming an RSBC volunteer?
A. I’d definitely say – just go for it! It’s been so useful for me, and I’m very grateful for everything it’s helped me achieve.
We’re always looking for amazing new volunteers so take a look at our volunteers page if that sounds interesting to you!
